This programme is designed for applicants who already have an existing degree in any subject (level 6), or who are working towards their final year (completed by December 2022) and have their predicted grades at time of application.
This detective route is suitable for applicants who wish to commence their career as a detective constable.
In the modern age, detective constables undertake a complex role and operate at a degree level every day, so we are recognising the work we do with the appropriate level of qualification.
You will be a student officer from day one, earning while you learn, and will spend two and a half years following a work-based training programme that integrates your training and the achievement of Occupational Competence.
You’ll cover all police constable learning, plus the training required to be an investigator (detective constable). This will be bolstered by off-the-job learning delivered by our in-house training team. You will be fully supported, and the assessment of your learning is based on your role as a uniformed police constable and detective constable.
We have partnered with York St John University to deliver the training of our student officers. Upon successful completion of your training period, you will achieve a Graduate Diploma in Professional Policing Practice from York St John University.
Your work will be demanding as you will begin training as an operational police officer, working full shifts alongside studying for your qualification. However, you will be supported in your studies. Training is not delivered in a lecture/seminar style but is integrated into your police training and is more about workshops, group work, general teaching and interactivity. All learning material will be available to you '24/7' online.
You will be provided with 20 per cent ‘off the job’ time to carry out your studies and assessments are based on the role of a police officer and detective constable. Yes, there will be some essays and examinations on law and policy, but it is so much more, including e-portfolios, operational policing plans, problem solving, presentations, policy reviews, investigation plans, case studies and evidenced-based policing projects.
You will undergo initial police training to prepare you for your operational role. Educational modules will be integrated into the initial programme and post tutor phase.
The first 12 months will be spent developing your core skills as a uniform police constable on patrol. You will then spend the remaining 18 months in an investigation unit whilst studying for the National Investigators’ exam, completing your diploma studies along with your detective portfolio.
Successful candidates will not be able to transfer from the DHEP Detective programme to a DHEP Uniform programme once they have commenced with the force.
To apply for the programme you must:
Note: If you have qualifications from outside the UK then please contact us before you apply so that we can make an individual assessment about whether you meet our application criteria.
Alternatively, if you have served in the armed forces and have successfully completed the minimum term of service (usually four years) and have achieved an exemplary reference, please contact us before you apply so that we can make an individual assessment about whether you meet our application criteria.
As part of the Armed Forces Covenant scheme, Humberside Police offer support to ex-forces candidates going through the recruitment process, we encourage any candidates to self-declare their forces background on the application form.
