Name: Chris Glover
Rank: Special Chief Inspector
Where do you work as a Special Constable?: I am based at Pocklington but covering the East Riding of Yorkshire from a supervision point of view.
When did you join as a Special Constable?: I Joined in September 2004
What do you do for a living outside the Special Constabulary?: I work in a distribution business as a head of department/board member but the main part of my role is based around buying product from multi-national suppliers and the negotiation that goes with that. If I am not working or policing I have a keen interest in cars, and doing things with my family.
Why did you join as a Special Constable?: From a very early age I had always had an interest in policing and justice - I am a strong believer in doing what's right. My career took the path it has done and although I considered moving into policing as a regular I have found that being a Special Constable fulfils my interest but enables me to continue my career in the "day job".
What types of duty you typically get involved in?: Mainly rural policing but my main interests are in traffic and targeting those involved in drugs. I particularly like taking drink-drivers and uninsured cars off the road, and opportunities to seize illegal drugs seem to keep presenting themselves.
What are your future ambitions as a member of the Special Constabulary?: At the moment I am supporting the East Riding team of Special Sergeants, and hopefully passing on some experience - usually of how to approach things, and some knowledge I have gained over the years. It is key for us to engage with the public in the right way.
What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of joining?: It is a significant commitment, one to take seriously, and to remember that we are there to support the regulars in a professional way. There is no room for people who just want to do it for the uniform as they soon lose interest and don't gain the respect of regular officers. Where Specials treat the role as a job, which it is, they become an integral part of the policing team and take huge satisfaction from making a contribution to the police and doing good within society in general.
