Humberside Police, in partnership with Grimsby – Faraway CIC, has created a Neurodiversity Alert card, to help our officers and staff provide a bespoke response to neurodiverse members of our community.
These Neurodiversity Alert cards can be carried by members of the public to help them communicate their needs as an autistic or neurodiverse person when interacting with police officers, police staff or volunteers.
We recognise that people who are neurodiverse or who are on the autism spectrum may feel anxious when dealing with the police, may need more time to process and understand what is happening, or may have difficulty communicating. It is hoped these alert cards will help people feel more comfortable when dealing with us, especially in situations that could potentially be stressful or frightening.
The alert cards have space for people to share some basic information about themselves, the contact details for an appropriate adult if applicable, and contain some useful information and practical advice. The visual aids on the cards can also help people describe their feelings. All this combined lets the police know someone may require additional support or assistance to help explain their reactions and feelings.
If someone needs to present their card to a member of our police force, we will then have this important information about them readily available allowing us to do our work with a better understanding of their needs and helps us to communicate more effectively and avoid any misunderstandings.
These cards are free of charge and can be obtained from your nearest police station or in our custody suites.
You can also download a copy of the card. Please note that the cards are C8 in size.
