FORCEWIDE
Did you know there are only a handful of police forces in the country who have a specialist marine unit, and we’re one of them?
A wave of opportunity has reached the shore, and a new role will be heading back out to sea – are you ready to jump on board?
For those of you with maritime experience, you can join our Marine Unit as a Special Constable to play your part in keeping our vast marine community safe – both on land and on sea.
You will initially join as a Special Constable, where you will undertake training to get the same powers, uniform and protective equipment as regular officers. Then as soon as you gain independent patrol status, you will move directly into the Marine Specialism, working alongside Marine Police Officers and supporting them with incidents, patrols, and tackling coastal crime.
Marine policing requires specialist skills and equipment to enable our officers to police the miles of our coastlines, ports, and waterways including 123 square miles of the Humber Estuary, 80 miles along the Humber riverbank, 29 miles of River Hull, 20 miles of River Trent, and 15 miles of the River Ouse. But it doesn’t stop there…
UK Territorial Waters extend our patch to 12 nautical miles from the coast, meaning our jurisdiction increases by a huge 732 square miles.
That, on top of the 1357 square miles of land, and it’s safe to say we have a big area to police and makes Humberside Police almost 39% water!
Not only will you work alongside Marine Constables and other officers from departments across the force such as our Armed Response Unit, but you will also work closely with a whole host of different organisations, and volunteer entities such as Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), National Crime Agency (NCA), Border Force, Counter Terrorism, Coastguard Agency, and Ports.
Whilst working with partners is important and helps to keep people safe, ultimately our relationship with our marine communities is crucial.
There are unique issues that affect residents and businesses along our waterways and coastlines, and it’s important anyone who gets on board understands this – even if you’re volunteering in your own time as a Special Constable too.
This helps us to prevent crime, address anti social behaviour (ASB), and make sure those looking to cause harm to our communities are held accountable for their actions.
The community are our eyes and ears – they know what normal activity and behaviour looks like on and around rivers, waterways, marinas, or moorings, and what doesn’t. They report things that don’t seem right so we can investigate.
The majority of the team’s work focuses on anyone who uses the water along out coast and waterways, but this doesn’t only mean boat-owners, it includes paddle borders, canoeists, and kayakers, kite-surfers, and people using personal watercraft. In fact, anyone who uses the water for leisure!
It’s a-boat time you joined us, don’t you think?
We are also recruiting for regular Special Constables to join our team: HP - Special Constable (Volunteer Police Officer) January 2027 Intake - Humberside & South Yorkshire Police
