TRiM
The nature of police work means that you may have already been involved in some way in one or more traumatic incidents. The TRiM process is designed to identify early those individuals who may go on to develop psychological problems following such events. Research has shown that early identification and intervention is very effective at preventing long term problems.
Most people will cope with such events where others may develop physical, emotional, and/or psychological problems. This should not be seen as a weakness and your individual response will very much depend on what is happening in your life at that time.
Individuals can have many different responses to a specific event and it is important to realise that whether an event is traumatic or not is a matter of how the event is perceived by the individual.
It is for these reasons that TRiM has been introduced in Humberside.
What is TRiM?
Chaplaincy
A chaplain is someone who ‘walks alongside’ others at times in their life journey. Their faith is inclusive, welcoming and seeks to serve all people, celebrating and affirming every person without discrimination. You do not need faith to speak to them, and they will not talk about faith unless you ask them to. Their faith enables them to be a companion to others.
Peer Supporters
Peer Supporters are there to be a friendly ear if you need advice, guidance, a shoulder to cry on, or help with something more serious. They are not counsellors and may not have all the answers, but their training is such that they are able to provide you with information that may help or to find someone who can.
They are separate to your colleagues, managers and friends and therefore, that independent ear we all need at times.
Whilst maintaining personal boundaries, this trained volunteer role is to listen empathetically and provide support, including signposting to relevant help and further professional support if required.
Working in a confidential manner in line with our Code of Ethics, the Peer Supporters promote peer support throughout the force.
Their work helps to identify issues impacting colleagues as well as actively monitoring their own wellbeing and advising the Peer Support Co-ordinator of any issues.
Wellbeing Champions
Wellbeing Champions are trained to raise awareness of health and wellbeing in your team or department, challenging stigma and taking action to improve physical and mental wellbeing awareness. An extension of the Wellbeing Team, Champions are there for you to contact and get help accessing health and wellbeing support and activities.
Wellbeing Intranet Page
Intranet site available to all staff enabling access to all Wellbeing provisions detailed above including increased signposting for local and national support lines and advice services.
Please note that police forces in the United Kingdom are routinely required to provide information and statistics to government bodies and the recording criteria is set nationally. However, the systems used for recording these figures are not generic, nor are the procedures used locally in capturing the data. It should be noted that for these reasons this force’s response to your questions should not be used for the comparison purposes with any other response you may receive.
If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or 01482 578662.
