Rock Challenge is an international performing arts competition for schools and colleges. We brought it to the Humberside Police area in 1996 and have been working with Be Your Best Foundation to run it every year since.
The competition is a chance for young people to get creative and work together to create an 8 minute dance or drama performance set to music.
The performances are themed and tackle issues that affect young people, teaching them important life lessons. In previous years we’ve seen pieces about bereavement, drugs, bullying and the suffragette movement, amongst others.
Schools across the region apply and staff work with pupils to create the pieces with students taking responsibility for choreography, set design, lighting, costumes, hair and make-up. The performances are always visually stunning and entertaining, a testament to the hard work of the teams.
We also work with Be Your Best Foundation to run J Rock, a junior version of the competition aimed at primary schools.
This runs very similarly to Rock Challenge, with schools often using literature and pop culture to tackle issues in a way that younger children can understand.
Rock Challenge Youth Division is a version of the competition that gives young people who do not have access to Rock Challenge at school the chance to take part. We are the only area in the country to run this variation and see some fabulous results.
