Prepare - To mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack

The purpose of our Prepare work is to mitigate the impact of a terrorist attack where that attack cannot be stopped. This includes work to bring a terrorist attack to an end and to increase our resilience so we can recover from its aftermath. An effective and efficient response will save lives, reduce harm and aid recovery.

Attacks in the UK and abroad remind us all of the terrorist threat we face. Police and security agencies are working tirelessly to protect the public but it is also important that communities remain vigilant and aware of how to protect themselves if the need arises.

The police service has released the short public information film called ‘Stay Safe: Firearms and Weapons Attack’ which sets out the key options for keeping safe should the worst happen (below).

Recently new videos have been released which cover the core CT guidance needed by staff working in a Crowded Place at home or abroad. The films show you what to expect and how to respond in the safest way to the terrorist threat:

Counter Terrorism Security Advisers

Counter Terrorism Security Advisers (CTSA’s) based in Humberside work with businesses, partner agencies and the community to identify and assess sites that may be vulnerable to terrorist or extremist attack.

They also work with trade organisations and professional bodies to ensure counter terrorism protective security advice is incorporated into general crime prevention advice and guidance.

CTSA’s can assist with:

  • Devising and developing appropriate protective security plans to minimise impact on their sites and the surrounding community
  • Explaining the threats from terrorism and advise on resilience

CTSA’s are trained in specialist areas and can provide advice and guidance on:

  • explosives and precursor chemicals
  • pathogens and toxins
  • radiological sources
  • site and vulnerable point surveying
  • integrated security systems
  • designing out vehicle borne terrorism
  • threat from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attack

They are also responsible for the protective security of crowded places (areas where there may be large crowds who could be vulnerable to terrorist attack) for example shopping centres, sporting stadiums, pubs and bars or transport hubs.
