Two teenage boys have visited South Africa after winning the trip of a lifetime for their campaign to raise awareness of organ donation as part of Humberside Police’s Lifestyle initiative.
Lifestyle is a Humberside Police youth engagement project which encourages young people to work in teams to complete projects that help benefit their community.
The boys, Ben and Tyler, were awarded the prize by Humberside Police’s Chief Constable Lee Freeman at an awards ceremony at Hull City Hall last November.
The boys had a fantastic time in South Africa, from spotting exotic animals on safari to visiting a school to meet with the local children.
When asked about the trip, Ben said: “'The trip to South Africa was all amazing, but my favourite part was seeing a hyena eating a buffalo, it was unbelievable that we could get so close. Hyenas are now my favourite animal.
“We learnt loads about Africa. We went to the township Soweto, it made me realise how lucky we are. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.”
Tyler said: “The safari was my favourite part of the trip to South Africa, it was an amazing once in a lifetime experience.
“You don't realise but you actually learn a lot along the way, not just about the animals but life skills.”
Trudie, Ben’s mum, said: “'The lifestyle project is an amazing opportunity for young people, it encourages them to think about helping other people and doing something positive in their summer holiday.
“Teenagers often get bad press, but the project brought out the best in the two boys and demonstrated that teenagers can use their energy and enthusiasm to produce outstanding results. Lifestyle has helped Ben to develop skills for life.
“Most importantly Ben now understands that it's a nice feeling you get helping others and trying to make a difference.”
Karen and Dan, Tyler’s parents, said: “"We found that taking part in Lifestyle gave the boys something extra to focus on in their spare time whilst also raising so much awareness for organ donation which we are so proud of.
"Tyler's confidence has definitely grown over the last year doing Lifestyle, his experiences and memories will stay with him forever!”
