This month we're promoting Get Safe Online's month long 'Safe Dating' campaign which will focus on providing education and advice to help people date safely online.

Online dating has gained in popularity over the past few years allowing people to meet via the internet with many encounters leading to long-term relationships.

The vast majority of people who use these websites are genuine and sincere, and provide honest information about who they are. But of course there are exceptions who are involved in 'dating scams' and 'romance scams'.

We'll be putting out social media messages regularly throughout February to remind people about what to look out for, how to keep themselves safe, and protect not only themselves but their bank accounts and savings when meeting people online.

Some key messages are:

  • Pick a reputable site. Don't move any conversations away from that site unless you're confident the person is who they say they are.
  • Get to know the person, not the profile. Don't be scared or embarrassed to ask questions of the person.
  • Never send money or bank details to someone you've met online.
  • Don't give away too many personal details. Don't reveal your full name, DoB, home address or workplace that could lead to identity theft.
  • Check the person you've met is genuine. Do this by going online and looking for their name, photos, repeatedly used phrases or even search for 'dating scam' or 'romance scam'. Remember it's your own safety you're looking out for.
  • Always report any fraudulent activity to Action Fraud https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ and the website you've joined.
  • Don't be embarrassed to report any concerns as it could save you and others from becoming victims.

Please look out for our social media updates throughout February. Talk to friends and share our advice and information.
