16 Jan 2018

We have launched a murder investigation following an assault on a 45-year-old* man on the pavement outside the Halifax Bank on Old Market Place in Grimsby yesterday afternoon. (Monday 15 January).

The incident was reported to us at 4.30pm yesterday and the man was taken to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital for treatment, where he sadly died this morning.  Enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of death.

We are asking the public to help us to identify the suspect who is described as a white man, aged 20-45 years, with dark rimmed glasses. He wore a beige or grey waist length jacket with a peaked hood, which was up.  He was also wearing dark trousers and grey or brown trainers.

Detective Inspector Stewart Miller said: “At the current time we believe this was an isolated incident and there is no risk to the wider community.

“Our initial investigations have lead us to believe this attack was not targeted at any specific section of the community and will be increasing patrols in the area to provide reassurance to people living and working in the area.”

Anyone who saw the incident or was in the Old Market Place area between 3.30pm and 5pm yesterday and can help with our enquiries is asked to contact us on the dedicated incident room number 01472 290204 or, alternatively, call 101 quoting log 372 15/01/18.

*We initially reported that he was 47-year-old - we have now had his age confirmed as 45
