Don't fall for Good Citizen scam

Warning over fake award con circulating the UK

4 Mar 2016

Have you been told you have won a Good Citizen Award?

If so, beware. It could be a scam designed to con you out of your hard-earned cash.

Action Fraud has been receiving reports from people across the UK that they received cold calls claiming to be on behalf of the UK or British Government Grant Department.

The potential victims are told they have won a cash Good Citizen Award – usually around £8,000 – but told they must pay a fee of around £210 for the funds to be released.

Detective Sergeant Mike Wood, from the force Economic Crime Unit, said: “If you receive such a call, it is a scam. End the phone call and don’t give the caller any of your personal and financial data.

“There is no genuine Good Citizen Award scheme in the UK that operates by cold calling ‘winners’ and demanding an upfront fee to release the grant.

“Fortunately, Action Fraud has received very few reports of people losing money as a result of the scam, but we want to join them in spreading the word about it in the hope of preventing any more being taken in.”

If you, or someone you know, has been affected by this or any other scam, please report it to Action Fraud, or call 0300 123 2040.
