New technology results in burglary charge

Humberside Police has been a trial force for a new initiative. Under a new law, prolific burglars and thieves are automatically tagged on release from prison.

Nationally, more than half of those convicted of theft and burglary reoffend within a year and almost 80% of cases result in no suspect being identified.

The new tags will allow GPS satellites to monitor offenders 24 hours a day for up to 12 months – and it is already paying dividends in Humberside.

Humberside Police was notified by the tags, via the Ministry of Justice, that a suspect was revealed to be in the immediate area of a commercial burglary that occurred on Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe.

A 35-year-old man was later arrested and charged with non-dwelling burglary and was remanded at Grimsby Magistrates Court on Tuesday 5 October.
