On Tuesday 26 November, Humberside Police hosted the 2024 Lifestyle Awards at Hull City Hall, a special event dedicated to recognising the hard work and dedication of young people who spent their summer making a positive impact in their local communities.
The Lifestyle Project, a key youth engagement initiative of Humberside Police, encourages young people to work in teams and complete community-focused projects during their summer holidays. This year’s projects ranged from bake sales and park clean-ups to raising funds for food banks and creating forest schools and environmental awareness programmes. The diversity of the projects this year was truly inspiring.
A total of 57 teams took part in this year’s initiative, raising over £18,700 for charity and contributing more than 4,500 hours to community improvement.
In the lead-up to the ceremony, each team submitted detailed reports of their projects, which were reviewed by the judging panel. The panel included Ruth Gore from Safer Roads Humber, Chief Inspector Richard Mirfin, Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison, and Alan Beauchamp from Stagecoach. Winners were selected across six categories: the Company Challenge Award, Community Award, Teamwork Award, Resilience Award, Youth Team Award, Impact Award, and the Lifestyle Finalists.
The ceremony, hosted by actor and presenter Amy Thompson, invited the teams on stage to receive their certificates and prizes in recognition of their outstanding contributions over the summer.
This year’s overall winners were presented with the first-ever Lifestyle Trophy and a trip to London for the whole team. The top award, announced by Assistant Chief Constable Mike Walker, went to the Patrington Champions. Concerned about road safety near their school, the team created leaflets, posters, and parking tickets to raise awareness. They also raised funds through raffles and lemonade sales to produce road safety materials. Their efforts not only benefitted their local community but also inspired other schools to take similar action.
Additionally, Humberside welcomed a number of guests to the ceremony to celebrate the Lifestylers, this included the High Sheriff of East Riding of Yorkshire Chris Henson, Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison, Superintendent Doug Blackwood and Ian Robertson from Safer Roads Humber who congratulated the Lifestylers on their achievements. The event was also supported by special performances from Fierce Elite Cheerleaders, Youth Aspire Connect’s The Zionites, and NAPA.
Assistant Chief Officer Mike Walker said: ''It’s truly inspiring to see so many young people dedicating their time and energy to projects that make a real difference to their communities. The Lifestyle Awards provide an important opportunity to celebrate their efforts and acknowledge the positive impact they have had.
''These young people have given up their time and energy to improve their community. Each of the teams have made a huge impact, and I hope their efforts inspire other young people to do the same.
"I am proud of the achievements we’ve seen throughout the project. The dedication and creativity of everyone who has participated made a real difference in their communities, and it's inspiring to see how their efforts will continue to have a lasting impact. The Lifestyle project shows just how powerful our youth can be when given the opportunity to lead and make change.
''Well done to the winning teams, and a huge congratulations to everyone involved in the Lifestyle project this year. Every project, finalist or not, has made a meaningful impact, and the benefits to our communities will be felt for years to come. Thank you for your dedication and hard work this summer.''
