A Scunthorpe man has been given a 16 week suspended sentence after he pleaded guilty to stealing face creams from Boots and toys from ASDA.
Mark Smith (36) of Ashdown Avenue, Scunthorpe was given the sentence (which is suspended for 12 months) at Grimsby Magistrates Court on Sunday 24 April. He was also ordered to pay compensation.
It comes as four others have been charged with offences relating to shop thefts in Scunthorpe.
Superintendent Dave Hall said: “I hope this serves as a warning to anyone else considering committing offences of this nature, it is not acceptable and we will take action.
“The local neighbourhood Sergeant and Inspector have been working very closely with retailers in Scunthorpe to identify and arrest suspects.
“By working together we’re making a real impact, as with offences of this kind a small number of people are usually responsible for multiple incidents.”
We’re also continuing to work with the council, health services and community groups to find a long term, sustainable solution to the problem as this isn’t something that can be done just by making arrests.
Supt Hall continued: “The majority of those who steal from shops are doing so to feed a drug habit. They’re also vulnerable, with complex lifestyles and it’s important that all of us come together to offer them the support they need to make more positive choices.
“Only by doing this can we tackle the issues which have caused them commit these offences in the first place and find a long-term solution to the concerns of retailers and shoppers.”
