Become a Community Safety Volunteer & Employer Supported Policing

The Community Safety Volunteers scheme was first established in April 2008 to promote community involvement in policing through volunteering.

The aim of the scheme - which is run in partnership with the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service - is to encourage those living and working in the area to use their skills, experience and knowledge to assist and support Police Officers, Police Community Support Officers, Special Constables, support staff and fire service personnel in their daily business.

A dedicated teams of volunteers from a variety of backgrounds and cultures already work across the Humberside force area, making a positive contribution to the area's communities and using their wide range of experiences and skills to enhance the work of the police and fire service.

What do volunteers assist with?

The tasks performed by our volunteers vary widely, but will never replace roles held by paid staff. Among the areas within Humberside Police and Humberside Fire and Rescue volunteers may be used:

  • Administrative support
  • Diversity and community engagement
  • Recruitment event assistance
  • Helping to give crime prevention and fire safety advice
  • Playing roles in training exercises

What qualifications do I need? 

You do not need any formal qualifications; we will match skills and abilities to available roles.

How old do I have to be to apply? 

You can apply to be a volunteer once you are 16 and have left secondary education. There is no upper age limit.

Will I receive expenses? 

Whilst unpaid, volunteering shouldn’t leave volunteers out of pocket. You can claim expenses for travelling to and from your placement. The force will reimburse you for other expenses incurred whilst volunteering, provided it was relevant to the task. 

Are there any residency rules? 

You will need to have lived in the UK for more than three years and over to be eligible to apply

Applicants meeting the above requirements will be invited for interview and, if successful, will then undergo vetting and health checks. References from two people known to the applicant for at least two years will also be required.

Once vetting has been successfully completed, applicants will be contacted to discuss their skills and interests and a suitable placement will be arranged, along with an induction. Training specific to the role will also be given. There may be requirements and opportunities for additional training as part of the scheme, which will be monitored by our volunteer supervisor.

Employer Supported Policing

Employer Supported Policing (ESP) is a partnership benefitting employers, their staff and the police service by releasing Special Constables and Police Support Volunteers to volunteer in the communities they serve.

How can organisations be involved?

We are asking organisations to consider releasing their staff who are Special Constables and Police support Volunteers by giving them paid time off to undertake their volunteer police duties and/or training

Humberside Police are working in partnership with a number of employers and currently have some successful schemes operating.  Work continues to develop links with employers and expand ESP across the Force.
