Firearms Legislation Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006
Firearms legislation is changing on Monday 01 October 2007. Humberside Police is working to ensure everyone is aware of the new legislation and of how it will affect them.
The main changes include:
- It will be an offence for anyone to sell or transfer air weapons by way of trade or business - unless they are registered with the police as a firearms dealer.
- Dealers will have to keep a register of transactions involving air weapons, their component parts and accessories.
- Dealers will be required to record the quantities and description of air weapons purchased, acquired, sold or transferred together with the names and addresses of the other parties involved.
- The age limit for possessing without adult supervision, hiring or purchasing an air weapon will rise from 17 to 18.
- There will be a ban on the supply of realistic imitation firearms.
- It will be an offence to manufacture, import or sell realistic imitation firearms.
- It will be an offence for anyone aged under 18 years to purchase an imitation firearm and for anyone to sell an imitation firearm to someone aged under 18 years.
Humberside Police Firearms Licensing Officer Jennifer Edgar said: “These are important and far reaching changes. We want to help people to ensure they remain on the right side of the law.
“We would urge anyone with any concerns about how the changes may affect them to contact us for advice.
“We have spoken to some dealers about registration and would urge everyone involved in the trade to contact us as soon as possible to ensure they are properly registered.
