Humberside Police Rock Challenge 2012
Students in schools across our region are buzzing due to the return of the Humberside Police Rock Challenge events to be held at some of our regions most prestigious venues in a few weeks time. Rehearsals are picking up pace and local Police Officers are working with schools on their patch to promote the ethos of the competition; achieving a natural drug free high through performance and raising awareness of the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco.
Forty-four local schools have been busy rehearsing since September in preparation for the events, in a bid to showcase their talents to a live audience. Due to the success of the competition we have teamed up with East Riding of Yorkshire Council to bring an additional East Riding Junior Rock Challenge event to the area due to popular demand!
Kevin Allen, youth support service manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, "We are pleased to be supporting the 2012 Rock Challenge. We have seen that Rock Challenge encourages positive peer pressure and attracts young people who would not otherwise participate in extra-curricular activities and is, therefore, an effective positive diversionary tool for young people. Participants talk of the natural high they experience through taking part in and performing to large public audiences. "We would encourage all young people to get involved and would like to wish participants every success in the competition."
On the day of the junior events, a range of workshops will be organised for pupils aimed at raising awareness of the dangers of drugs. These will include sessions with the Humberside Police Dog Section and other partners to promote a range of topics including healthy living and personal safety, before the ultimate showcase on the evening.
Rock Challenge is now in its fifteenth year and is building in momentum. This stunning performing arts competition continues to encourage youngsters to be their best, without the need for artificial stimulants, whilst achieving a natural drug-free high through performance. As sister project to Lifestyle, the scheme focuses upon building essential life skills, including teamwork, problem solving, leadership, motivation and communication skills. As with Lifestyle, confidence is raised through participation.

Background information
Rock Challenge is a competition for schools and colleges, focussing upon young people performing a piece of choreography, in a professional theatre and working with theatre and stage crew. Each school performs an eight-minute themed piece on stage and students and teachers come together and work on stage set, costumes and lighting design to an exceptionally high standard.
This stunning performing arts competition encourages participants to be their best without the need for artificial stimulants and experience a ‘drug free high’ through performance. The positive impact Humberside Police Rock Challenge has on participating schools is superb. Rock Challenge is a unique and effective way of raising awareness about the dangers of drugs and presents an ideal opportunity for Local Police and Police Community Support Officers (PCSO’s) to develop their links with schools.
In our policing area alone, 92% of participants have reported they felt their confidence, self-esteem and teamwork skills had improved, we can also report a reduction in the number of students who smoked, drank alcohol or have used drugs as a direct result of Rock Challenge.
