Humberside Police - protecting communities, targeting criminals

Special Constables

Many people are of the understanding that the Special Constabulary is a relatively new organisation. In fact the idea of the people policing themselves can be dated back to the 13 Century.

As far back as 1673 Charles II passed an act of parliament that said that any citizen may be sworn in as a constable on a temporary basis to deal with threats of disorder.

The Special Constabulary in its current format has recently celebrated it 175th anniversary and although the types of duties that officers have been involved in have changed over that period, the ethos of members of the public assisting their local constabulary with the policing of their local community has remained the same.

How do I join?

Though you are in principal a volunteer, Humberside Police is not in a position to take everyone who applies. Therefore, there are a number of assessments that you will need to go through in order for you to demonstrate that you have the basic skills required to become a Special Constable.

Presentation Evening

The first thing you will need to do is to attend a presentation evening.  This will give you an overview of the recruitment and training process.  Presentation evenings are held within all divisions and occur every 4-6 weeks.  Please register your interest in attending a presentation evening by calling HR Shared Services on 01482 808000 or send an email with your contact details and address to hrsharedservices@humberside.pnn.police.uk
