Selection Process

Our recruitment process is testing but is essential to ensure that the right people are appointed to this key role. Through the assessment process we test the skills required for the post.

The key competencies that the selection process focuses on are: 

  • Effective communication — communicates clearly, adapting the style of communication to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Community and customer focus — sees things from a customer’s point of view. Builds a good understanding and relationship with the community.
  • Personal responsibility — takes personal responsibility for own actions and for sorting out issues and problems as they arise.
  • Resilience — remains calm and confident and responds logically and decisively in difficult circumstances.
  • Problem solving — gathers information from a range of sources to understand situations, making sure it is reliable and accurate. Identifies risks and considers alternative courses of action to make good decisions.
  • Respect for Race and Diversity — understands other people’s views and takes them into account. Treats people with respect at all times no matter what their background, status, circumstances or appearance.
  • Team working — works effectively as a team member and helps build relationships within it.

 Application form

Once you have completed and returned your application form it will be assessed against the minimum standards  and the competencies. If you reach the required standard you will be invited to an Assessment Process. (Please Note application forms will only be issued when we are actively recruiting PCSOs).

References and security checks

Educational, previous employment and where appropriate personal references will be sought. Thorough security checks will be carried out including a financial check. 

Fitness   

Candidates require a good general level of fitness but there is no fitness test. 

Assessment process 

The Assessment Process comprises the following elements: 

  • Two written exercises
  • Interactive/role play exercises
  • Competency based interview    

Further details of the Assessment Process will be sent to you with your invitation allowing you time to prepare.

Medical assessment

If you are successful at the Assessment Centre you will be required to complete a medical questionnaire. You will then attend for a medical examination with the Force Medical Officer.
