Town Centre Shop Theft:-
The town ward team and local partners Safer Neighbourhoods, The Parishes and the Foundry Security teams and Scunthorpe Town Centre business watch continue their efforts to tackle shop theft and anti social behaviour. Recently a persistant and prolific shop thief " Kieran Ferguson" an individual who had caused damage to retailers in the division was given an anti social behaviour order lasting two years. The terms of the order are that he does not enter a designated area of the town centre for the two year period, or cause harrassment, alarm or distress to any person within North Lincolnshire.
Upon handing this order to Ferguson the district judge commented," Although shoplifting has no public order offences per se the impact on staff can cause harassment alarm and distress. The impact of such theft is underestimated and is not pleasant for staff to deal with.A shoplifter under the influence of drink or drugs is particularly worrying. Staff do not deserve to deal with this in addition to their daily duties"
This again shows the strength of partnership working to make the town centre of Scunthorpe a safe and enjoyable place to be.
Further more the issue of cycling within the pedestrianised area of the town centre is being tackled. One such male was summoned to court in the last week for using his pedal cycle within the zone despite being warned by an officer. This seemingly minor matter has a great impact on the safety of shoppers and local police not tolerate such behaviour.
In summary this NAT issue has had a successful month with shop theft figures remaining at a low level. This success is due to all agencies working together for the greater good of Scunthorpe Town Centre
