Humberside Police - protecting communities, targeting criminals

Beverley St Mary's April update

April information

Of interest 41% of burglaries reported to Humberside Police in the past week have been entered by insecurities within the attacked properties (windows left open, doors left unlocked).

Burglary, on the whole, is an opportunist crime. A burglar will select his target because it offers him the best opportunity to carry out his crime undetected and with the fewest number of obstacles in his way. A building that presents itself as unoccupied and insecure is far more likely to be targeted than one which is properly secured:

Simple tips can be followed to help improve your home security…

• Install a visible burglar alarm
• Keep your valuables out of sight
• Always keep sheds and outbuildings locked
• Cancel milk and other deliveries if you will be away for days or weeks at a time
• Leave some lights on if it will be dark before you get home
• Close and lock all your doors and windows, even if you are only going out for a few minutes
• Do not leave your car keys or ID documents near doors, letterboxes or windows
• Mark or etch your property with your postcode and house or flat number
• Consider improving window lock and door lock security (however remember even the best lock is no use if it is not locked).
• Do not keep a spare house key near to the house, burglars know all the hiding places
• Do not label your keys with your address on

The things that criminals may look out for are…

 Milk bottles or parcels on the doorstep
 Newspapers and mail in the letter box
 Unlit houses after dark
 All windows shut in very hot weather

Remember in order to prevent being a victim try to think like a burglar.

Please take this advice and do not advertise your property to thieves.
