Humberside Police - protecting communities, targeting criminals

Winners over the years

Below you will find pictures of the winners over the years, dating back to 1989! Along with details of their projects which saw them crowned overall Lifestyle champions of their year!

We would love to hear from you with your Lifestyle memories and feedback on the project to celebrate the success of young people throughout the Humberside Police area.

Huge congratulations to everyone involved in the project to date and we look forward to continued success for years to come!

One World One Chance, Sutton, Hull  - Alice, Olivia, Anna, Lily and Katie

A true sense of community spirit was achieved by their project as they worked to bring their whole community together through a number of events and fundraising activities, including: a big tea party in aid of Marie Curie, a family beach party, fun nights at the local pub including bingo, karaoke, charity auctions and much more; collections of food and toiletries for the homeless and rootless were organised; activity books were bought for doctors and dentist surgeries, as well as providing musical instruments for preschoolers and the play group.  They also celebrated different cultures by organising ‘Indian’, ‘Chinese’, and ‘Polish’ cultural evenings where friends and neighbours were invited to sample the cuisine, try on traditional dress and find out more about customs and traditions whilst having a brilliant time in great company!

Paul Lyons, Lifestyle Awards Supporter from Arco said, “As always, the high standard of Lifestyle projects combined with commitment and passion from the teams, made judging extremely difficult. It was a very close run competition for first place. ‘One World – One Chance’ claimed the overall prize because their project not only brought a whole community together, it also benefited a huge range of charities. The diversity of activities was overwhelming. Very deserved winners!”

The Three Amigos, Cleethorpes - Lewis, Josh and Reice

‘The Three Amigos’, Lewis, Joshua and Riece decided they would like to give something back to those who gave so much for their country during the Second World War. They visited the Age Concern Day Centre in Grimsby, helping out and soon making friends.  On a mission to take their new friends on a nostalgic day trip to Eden Camp, funds were raised by the intrepid team as they completed a gruelling 15 mile sponsored walk (dressed in shocking pink tutus for maximum impact!). Preparations were put into place for the coach trip to become a reality and as a result the trip was an outstanding success and greatly appreciated.

The team also visited Royal Court Nursing Home, organising a tea party for the residents who looked forward to their frequent visits. In between all their varied activities ‘The Three Amigos’ also found time to clean gravestones at a local cemetery and with remaining funds, the team provided a free slap up meal for 72 pensioners, including a slideshow of their summer activities met by a rapturous applause, proving that this team have certainly bridged the generation gap.

Paul Lyons, Lifestyle Awards Supporter from Arco said, “The diversity of the projects and the commitment of the teams made judging extremely difficult. It was an extremely close contest between all four finalists. ‘The Three Amigos’ took the overall prize because they convincingly bridged a 90 year generation gap. They paid a huge tribute to those who gave up so much for country and community and they also gave support and confidence to people in need. The team had to be mature beyond their years throughout this project. A great effort, a great team and what great fun... they epitomise everything that is positive about Lifestyle.”

Eco-Maniacs, Hull - Bryony, Charlotte, Evie and Bethany

The 'Eco-Maniacs' visited Pickering Park again to see how they could help, and at the outset nobody could have know how big their project would become! With the intention of restoring the sadly neglected rockery area to its former glory, the team undertook regular weeding, pruning, litter picking and re-planted the area with rockery plants and spring bulbs. A pathway and steps were discovered which had been covered in a layer of thick mud, and an old bench was sanded and re-stained.

Being very environmentally friendly, the team created a natural play area with balance beams, tree faces, wooden animals and stepping stones and were devastated when their work was vandalised, but they repaired the damage and carried on stronger than before.

They were active in seeking sponsorship and successfully gained grants which enabled the team to purchase and fit a wheelchair accessible picnic bench, a park bench and materials to produce twelve information signs which they made and displayed.

As if all this was not enough, the team worked hard to restore three huge whale jaw bones which had been lying disused for many years, spending hours painstakingly sanding and varnishing them, eventually using them to create an archway into the area along with a highly original seating feature.

The Eco-Maniacs also helped at a local teddy bears picnic and a fun day conducting surveys about the park and informing the public about recycling and their work. A very impressed Urban Park Ranger said "It is refreshing to realise that some young people do care and are willing to put the effort in to make a difference."

Scunny Bunnies, Scunthorpe - Holly, Bethany and Chloe

Are the winners of the holiday of a lifetime to Disney World, Florida in recognition of their summer of tireless campaigning and fund raising for their school friend Jack who lost his sight last year. A keen sportsman, becoming blind was a real blow to Jack who loved riding his bike. However, an opportunity arose to ride tandem in a school triathlon competition, and the intrepid Scunny Bunnies set out to raise funds for Jack to realise his dream.

Working in excess of 1,000 hours, the Bunnies organised a fun day complete with a magician, bouncy castle and stalls with raffle prizes donated by local shops. The fund raising continued with car washing sessions, car boot sales, dog walking, a sponsored walk in fancy dress and even painting fences at Scunthorpe Speedway. The team undertook a massive litter pick and a variety of odd jobs including cleaning the boots of the under 21s Scunthorpe United football team

What the team hadn’t realised is that as well as achieving their aim and raising enough money to buy the tandem bike for Jack, other activities helped them to galvanise their local community together. They made lots of new friends at the Cherry Tree House Residential Home, where they visited regularly entertaining residents and treating them to fruit baskets and an assortment of garden ornaments. As well as a phenomenal amount of work undertaken by this Lifestyle team, their cheerful attitude and modest demeanour really impressed the judges who felt the Scunny Bunnies epitomised everything about the Lifestyle project and had really made a difference to the area where they live.

Two thousand and eight was an incredibly exciting year for Lifestyle, as we are celebrated 20 years of the project!  In this time, in excess of 135,000 young people have taken part in Lifestyle working a staggering 2 million hours to help others!  We also managed to track down all of the winners of Lifestyle and brought everyone together at a summer reunion ball! Photo above!

Brough Babes, Brough - Carrie, Jodie, Ellie and Katie

With the aim of encouraging families to take more exercise, the Babes created a 6 mile wildlife walk along the Humber Foreshore called ‘The Brough Babes Humber Hike’.  This was a mammoth task and they achieved it by working every single day throughout the summer!

The pathways were cleared and 16 wooden posts were erected to direct people on the route. A lifestyle lookout was created with a nature/wildlife information point, a forest trail and bird and bat boxes were also new features on the walk and for families there is a treasure hunt.  The team publicised their plans by producing a leaflet which they delivered to homes in Brough, encouraging everyone to use the walk and also to join the teams newly formed walking club to stop the paths becoming overgrown in the future. A promotional DVD of the hike and another on water safety have also been produced and distributed locally.

Picnic benches and litter bins were put in place through many fund raising efforts including a craft fair, bag packing, a balloon race and selling calendars. And as if all this was not enough, the Brough Babes still found the time to host a successful sports day in the community and visited the residents at a local residential home to entertain them.

Healing Pool Savers, Healing, Grimsby  - Will, Jamie, Liam and Bryony

This industrious team tackled an ‘impossible’ project, which no one believed they had any chance of completing during the summer holidays. Over two years ago, the outdoor swimming pool at Healing Primary School closed. The pool was now in a very sorry state with stagnant water and vandalised changing rooms and the team decided they wanted to re-open the pool.

They gained permission for the project to go ahead and enlisted the help of parents, grandparents, local businesses and anyone else they could rope in, to completely renovate and then re-open the swimming pool. Jobs carried out included installing hot running water in the changing rooms, and decorating them inside and out. The team also repaired and repainted the exterior fencing around the pool and created a lovely garden area. The local Fire Brigade even helped by pumping out the smelly water from the pool!

An official Health and Safety report highlighted many areas of concern regarding the pool but the team were never daunted and managed to persuade electricians, plumbers and even the original pool makers to donate their services to help them complete the many tasks required.

Thanks to the efforts of The Healing Pool Savers, the pool is now open once more. To celebrate, the team also organised a swimming party and barbeque to thank everyone who made this ‘impossible’ task possible.

The Cop Shop Crew, Preston Road, Hull - Abbey, Lauren, Jamie, Ryan and Lisa

Team Mission Statement

  • To make Preston Road a better place to live
  • We can all try to be polite to each other
  • To make Preston Road cleaner
  • To help each other and be proud of our Estate
  • Together we can make a difference

And they sure did complete their mission!

In order to help residents of Foston Grove get rid of household and garden rubbish so that local children could play out safely, the Cop Shop Crew persuaded Hull City Council Waste Management to provide three more collections to dispose of the extra rubbish. The team leafleted the whole area to explain what they were trying to achieve. Then everyone became involved, both young and old alike, and all had a common goal, to see their neighbourhood transformed. The team worked very hard to get rid of all the rubbish and were so successful that they were able to do the same in Harpham Grove, much to the delight of the residents there.

The Council collected over fifteen tonnes of rubbish in total. Items included fridge freezers, trees, beds, boxes, TV’s, microwaves and tumble driers to name but a few!

And the Cop Shop Crew hasn’t stopped there. They also held a stall at the Preston Road Carnival to persuade the whole estate to follow their actions, for the benefit of the whole community.

The team was certainly not afraid of getting their hands dirty as the photos in their Activity Log prove, and with hard work and determination, have now transformed the area where they live, beyond their dreams.

Tornado Team, North Hull Estate - Melissa, Reece, Adam and Phillippa

This teams original idea was to build, plant, and permanently attach window boxes to bungalows for the elderly in their area, as they were aware that hanging baskets and pots always seemed to get stolen.  An early donation of wood from a local company spurred the team into action and soon they were learning how to cut the wood with a circular saw, and use a drill to put the boxes together before staining them.  Several of the elderly residents were hesitant at first, but as the boxes started to be put in place by the team, word soon spread until they were inundated with requests from 30 households!

During bad weather the Tornado Team enjoyed baking buns to sell to local people, and with the proceeds they bought a colourful selection of plants for each window box.

The Team is very proud that they succeeded in providing a permanent window box for every elderly resident who requested one and their efforts have been applauded by everyone in their neighbourhood. The old and young are now on first name terms and out of the many thank you letters are quotes “It’s not often we get something for nothing but if everyone thought like you it would be a better place.”

The Travis Turner Dream Team, Driffield  -  Rachel, Annabelle, Charlie, Hannah and Vienna

An action packed summer for this team who were determined to raise as much money as possible to help send Travis, a local boy, to Florida to swim with dolphins. Travis is 6 years old and has severe epilepsy but is able to swim, and has a love of fish and a passion for water.

The Dream Team organised so many events that it is almost impossible to list them all, but they included a Line Dance, Family Bingo Evening and Quiz Night, Car Boot Sales, Table Top Sales, Stalls at local festivals and Steam Rallies, as well as collection tubs. Flyers for the events were distributed to ensure good attendances and no shop in Driffield was safe from the team requesting raffle and tombola prizes!

An ex Lifestyle winner heard of their endeavours and offered his services free of charge for a family disco with a music quiz and dancing competition, which was great fun.  The team also undertook recycling, made bird boxes and went pet sitting for cats Snookie and Sammy, as well as Cubi the biting hamster!

The whole community rallied to the cause through the Dream Team’s enthusiasm, and as a result of their efforts Travis and his family are a lot closer to realising their dream.

The team sums up their project.  “We have found Lifestyle challenging.  We didn't always agree on everything but we managed to keep together no matter what till the end because we knew that what was important was Travis' trip to swim with the Dolphins”.

Too Hot To Handle, North Hull Estate  -  Ben, Jason, Ian and Danny

When “Too Hot To Handle” contacted the Dove House Hospice to see if they could be of any help, they had no idea how big a challenge they would face.  And the staff there could not imagine at the outset just how much could be achieved through sheer physical hard work.

A site was identified which needed clearing and had previously been used as a ‘dumping ground’ for almost ten years.  The rubbish was literally five feet high in places, and comprised of garden waste, old fencing, broken pots, decomposed black bin liners full of rubbish and, not surprisingly, mice.

The team set to, and spent the whole of the holidays bagging up rubbish, eventually filling thirty bin liners and three large skips (which they had donated).

Whilst clearing the site, the team managed to salvage some paving stones for later use and arranged for tons of gravel and new planters to be donated.

“Too Hot To Handle” have now created a delightful herb garden, complete with a bench, which had been donated to them and which they have restored.  Due to the peaceful and secluded location of the site, it is now an ideal place for the staff to use for their breaks and for moments of reflection.

Dove House Hospice has also benefited from a donation following a sponsored walk across the Humber Bridge made by the team.

All of the staff are delighted with the final garden, which is almost maintenance free, and now they have no excuse but to keep it tidy!

Care Bears, Hull -Chloe, India, Alex and Gemma

Here’s a team completely unafraid of getting their hands (or T-shirts) dirty!

Their chosen tasks included improving the environment by cleaning up a polluted stream ‘Fleat Drain’ which runs behind the Sainsbury’s store in Hessle. Photographs had showed dumped mattresses, shopping trolleys and a very badly neglected area.  The team was instrumental in contacting various agencies and getting the drain cleared, and then they repainted a bridge across the drain.

Coconuts were then placed in trees to encourage birds and wildlife back into the area, and the team conducted a scientific experiment on the water to prove that despite previous pollution it was not contaminated and therefore ideal for wildlife.

The ‘Care Bears’ also organised a sponsored walk across the Humber Bridge with all proceeds going to charity.  Further initiatives included repainting three local play parks at Ascott Close, Chiltern Park and Newington Park.  The reaction from other youngsters whilst they were painting over graffiti was a great disappointment, but, to their credit, the team was undeterred and even more determined to complete their tasks.

The ‘Care Bears’ also created a wonderful web site on the Hull Daily Mail Beehive Site to keep local residents updated on their progress during a busy summer.  They were delighted to win a competition for the best Beehive Lifestyle Web site in Hull

The Scartho Trilogy Plus 1 ½, Scartho, Grimsby  - Oliver, Paul, Marc, Thomas and Beth

This was a year long project from a team who achieved so much and helped so many. They completed no less than nine Company Challenges, namely the Book, Wildlife, Help a Neighbour, Clean Up, Be Fit Be Healthy, Green, Safety, Aid Call and Millennium Challenges.

The organised many events for the benefit of the wider community for example an American Barbeque a fish and chip supper for Age Concern a children’s party and fun day and a barbeque for St. Giles congregation. Fund raising events to finance these activities included a bring-and-buy sale, craft and cake stalls, a sponsored silence, a sponsored eat up session and numerous quizzes and competitions.

This team had taken part in Lifestyle many times previously so they felt the need to give something back to the project so they set about promoting the project to local schools. Their help proved fruitful and many more teams signed up as a result.

Funds that were raised were thoughtfully allocated , and, during the year, the team scooped the BBC Look North ‘Young Achievers Award’ and the ‘Grime busters Award’ for improving the community.

Scartho Trilogy Plus 1, Scartho, Grimsby  - Olly, Paul Marc and Thomas

This team could have affectionately been known as professional Lifestylers because theirs was a year round project. The Adult Advisers guest room was transformed into a Lifestyle office where plans were discussed and new challenges undertaken.

1999’s projects included building a brick barbeque and a seat at their local church and hosting a barbeque for everyone they have worked with. The trilogy also wanted to raise awareness of Marfan syndrome, an incurable genetic disorder of the bones and connective tissue which affects the muscular and skeletal system.  Lots of research went into this and the team managed to arrange for sufferers to meet each other for the first time.

The team also made time to visit elderly victims of crime, taking them home made hampers and reassuring them that not all young people are bad and cause trouble. Other projects included the tidying of the church graveyard and restoring a wood chip pathway.

Fundraising activities to complete the seven company challenges they tackled included cake stalls, sponsored trampolining, a sponsored ‘arrest’ and ‘bail’ from Grimsby Police Station, a pentathlon, summer fair, craft fair and a poetry competition. They even buried a time capsule which held all sorts of Lifestyle memorabilia.

Hands Across the Ages, Bransholme, Hull  - Victoria, Scott, Sean and Andy

This team’s original aim was to help the community covering the ages 7-76 thereby bridging the gaps between the generations. In particular, the team decided to help three of their elderly neighbours by completely transforming their gardens.

They realized they would need some funds so set to work organizing sponsored bike rides, raffles, tombola's, kids disco’s, recycling and a sponsored silence. Once the money was in place they set to work and soon became firm friends with some of the more senior citizens (Sid, Tom and Emmy) in their local area. This generous team couldn’t resist giving their new friends an extra special treat. After being told that they were going to visit the lifestyle office, Sid, Tom and Emmy were picked up in a chauffeur driven Rolls Royce and taken out for a wonderful meal. The team organized a red carpet for their arrival at the restaurant and the Lady Mayoress of Kingston Upon Hull was there to meet them! The surprise was fantastic and something that Sid, Tom and Emmy say they will never forget.

Thanks to the team’s sheer hard work and dedication the gardens were completely transformed over the summer holidays. The fence was repaired and re-stained and loads of new plants and shrubs were planted. They even installed a bench with a commemorative plaque and a new bird bath and table. The team took great care to make sure that their garden was water efficient by using bark chippings for a mulch and put in a water butt.

As the original aim was to help as many people as possible, the spare funds were used to enable the local Kingswood under 12’s football team to purchase a completely new kit.

Even More Wawne Out, Wawne, Hull -Rowena, Lizzie, Neil, Leigh Duffill and Becky

This forward thinking team came up with two very different ideas for their 1997 Lifestyle project. The first was to organize and run a cream tea for the over 60’s, and the other was to provide a trip for local autistic children and their parents to Kinderland in Scarborough. They funded these projects with a car boot sale, a sponsored bowling evening and by running stalls at Wawne show.

‘Even more Wawne out’ were soon to be completely worn out as their activities progressed throughout the summer holiday. The cream tea was a roaring success, as was the day trip. The team looked after two young autistic boys for the day to give their parents a break.

In their own words they found the experience “very hard work but also very rewarding"

Brigg's Busy Beggars, Brigg  - Wayne, Lisa, Neil and Rebecca

Briggs Busy Beggars came up with a project called ‘Kids Watch and Tell’ to help raise awareness in schools and families about bullying, graffiti, thieves, vandals and drugs.

Their aim was to encourage young people to talk to a family member, friend, teacher or someone else, instead of bottling things up to try and help to get the situation resolved.

They designed a leaflet, a poster and an awareness card which they handed out to people and also gave them to the local schools. A stall in Brigg’s market place also helped to publicise the project.

Really Sensible, Paull - Gemma, Catherine, Elizabeth and Heidi

This team really put their gardening skills into practice when they gave themselves the challenge of providing their local residential home with a garden which was specially designed for people with some sort of sensory impairment.

They achieved this by incorporating as many sensations into their garden as possible. Sound, for example is often used and our team included wind chimes and also pampas grass, which is a long stemmed bushy plant which makes a stimulating sound in the wind. In addition, they planted strong smelling plants and herbs plus brightly coloured ornamental plants.

The Wombles, Driffield - David, Lloyd, Christopher and Lewis

The Wombles wanted to renovate their village pond by clearing all the rubbish and painting the fencing. To encourage local wildlife they constructed a duck house and even arranged to introduce frogs and newts to the pond.

Thanks to the teams meticulous planning and research, the project ran smoothly from beginning to end. They celebrated their summer success with a Garton Pond Party which was attended by villagers and the Mayor of Driffield.

Blind Fury, Driffield  - Gary, Nigel, Anna and Stuart

This team was definitely up for a challenge.

The four members of ‘Blind Fury’ worked extremely hard refurbishing garages which had become an ugly eyesore in an otherwise tidy street. They were covered in graffiti and rubbish was being dumped next to them on a daily basis.

Even while the team was working on their project the garages were vandalized once again, however, thanks to a neighbour who agreed to ‘keep a look out’ to make sure that their work wasn’t ruined, the team managed to continue renovating them.

They persuaded a local shop to donate the paint for their work, but various sponsored events helped to pay for other necessary equipment like brushes, buckets and other tools.

Thy also kept themselves busy in the evenings by arranging numerous activities which included football, rounders, bike assault courses, grass fights and many more fun pursuits for the local youngsters to enjoy.

Loony Tunes, Hull (Joint Winners!)  - Zoe, Clare, Toni and Debbie

This team took on two challenges! The first was to help out at a local special school and the second was to paint murals and cartoon characters on the walls of a local nursery.

After meeting the organizers of both schools to discuss their project and how they could help, they prepared drawings for their wall painting. The characters they featured were Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, Thumper and Pinocchio. To raise money for the paint they held a car boot sale and sought sponsorship from local businesses. When they helped look after the children at the special school they realized just how much hard work was involved.

The Loony Tunes got to know all of the children and formed wonderful relationships with them. They entertained them all summer, supplied them with a swing, teddy bears and not to mention the most colourful walls around!

Green Gals, Market Weighton (Joint Winners!) - Sophie, Gillian, Claire  and Louise

This team worked vigorously to make some radical environmental improvements to the North Newbald area where they lived. Highlights of their 1992 Lifestyle Project included clearing 137 bin liners of firewood from a conservation area. In addition to this they also produced a detailed booklet explaining what they had done and why they did it, along with other ideas and information on helping to protect the environment, so that other people could follow in their footsteps

Gift of the Gab Girls, Hull  - Pamela, Victoria, Nicola and Claire

These girls definitely aren’t afraid of hard work! They clocked a total of three hundred hours of community work. They helped the elderly by shopping and gardening for them as well as keeping them company and entertaining them. They also helped out at various play schemes for youngsters. One of the most rewarding skills which they acquired through taking part in Lifestyle was learning sign language from a young deaf boy.

They also organised a sponsored wheelchair push to Beverley from the Kingston General Hospital Physiotherapy Unit where they spent time helping the staff in any way that they could. The push was a great success thanks to the girl’s hard work and attention to detail. They designed and created posters promoting the event and gained the necessary permission and guidance from Humberside Police to make sure it was safe. A Hull Daily Mail send-off and a Live BBC Radio Humberside Interview made it extra special.

The Groovy Glucose Gang, Hull - Rachel, Tiolina, Zainal, Lee and Moira

The Groovy Glucose Gang from West Hull wanted to help diabetic children lead more normal lives by raising money for the diabetic clinic at Hull Royal Infirmary.

The team raised enough money to buy 11 portable blood glucose monitors. They raised the money by holding jumble sale’s, cake stalls a concert and a gala and fun day.

It was due to the fact that the teams Adult Adviser’s daughter had diabetes that they decided on the project. They had witnessed for themselves the everyday problems that the illness brings.

The monitors allow diabetics take spot checks on their blood sugar levels. “One tiny drop of blood will tell them whether they can eat sweet things or not. It’s a lot safer for them” said Moira Puteh, then aged 13.

C.O.O.L, Pocklington  - Lynsay, Kathryn, Lucie and Lesley

The first ever ‘Operation Lifestyle’ winners, C.O.O.L from Pocklington earned their prize with a project to clean, clear and renovate a three hundred yard footpath in Pocklington. The path, known a Love Lane had so much litter that this tidy team collected thirty three bags of rubbish!
