Teenagers Causing Annoyance – Clumber and Thoresby Street
In early December 2009 there was a significant increase of complaints regarding Youths Causing Annoyance in and around the Dukeries area.
A local group of teenagers were suspected of being responsible for most of the anti-social behaviour (ASB). The reports were varied, including, Snowball’s being thrown, cars being jumped on, residents and shop keepers being verbally abused, a paperboy being assaulted and several reports of damage to property.
Both the police and the Council worked together in a multi agency approach to combat the problem. The quick action by all parties has helped to reduce the reports of ASB.
Local shop keepers targeted by the group were visited by the PCSO’s and Police Officers from Wyke Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) and information and updates was passed between them so action could be taken against the identified offenders.
Extra Patrols were done in the area by the NPT.
In December 2009 and January 2010 a letter drop was done by the Wyke ASB team to residents on CLUMBER STREET, NEWSTEAD STREET and BELVOIR STREET asking them to report any ASB in the area.
Of late there has been a steady decline in calls for service in the area for youths causing annoyance which is a very encouraging sign but that said a problem that does appear to be getting our attention are youths gathering in the Thoresby recreational grounds drinking alcohol and possible taking drugs during the evening.
Graffiti in and around the main shopping areas
Neighbourhood Policing Team PCSOs and PC’s regularly patrol all areas of the Ward including alleyways and ten foots; on foot, cycle and in vehicles. This high visibility presence discourages potential taggers and reassures residents of our presence in their area.
Several commercial properties have been visited and the majority were unhappy with the timing as any graffiti survey would require the property shutters to be closed to allow photographs to be taken thus affecting business and any subsequent removal process would need to be completed out of hours. They requested that to prevent disruption if the survey could be conducted later in the year when this could be kept to a minimum and any photographic evidence or possible cleaning or repainting needed could be completed out of hours or to a mutually agreed timetable.
A new system of recording and sharing data on graffiti is being used by Humberside Police and Hull City Council. It is an initiative that will assist partners in identifying offenders through their tags.
This system that is known as Hull Against Graffiti is starting to produce results and several offenders are now in the process of being prosecuted and several more also being investigated.
Littering in the Dukeries Area
The Council is taking the initiative on this priority. The aim is to reduce general littering to the Dukeries, Perth Street West and Woodgate Lane area.
