PERSISTENT OFFENDERS SHOP THEFT - Shop lifting across the force is a priority. Officers will conduct patrols in retail areas to deter and prevent offences. Known shoplifters will be spoken to and challenged. Suspicious individuals will also be stopped and checked. Crime prevention advice and support will be offered.

NOVEMBER UPDATE
A prolific shoplifter was arrested during the month and interviewed over a number of thefts from local stores. He admitted a number of offences and was charged to Hull Magistrates Court. Bail conditions were imposed and its hoped that he will be deterred from committing more crime. A local man called Lewis was convicted at Hull Magistrates court and sentenced to 22 weeks imprisonment. This followed a long investigation into a number of shop thefts in Willerby. The police are continuing checks on suspects and being highly visual in retail areas on the run up to Christmas and will take positive action on reports of shop thefts.
DECEMBER UPDATE
As part of our seasonal patrol strategy, local officers increased patrols of retail areas throughout December to reassure shoppers and deter criminals at a time of year when theft from shops tends to rise. I am please to say that the number of recorded thefts in the Willerby area did not increase and the team had the following success:
On 12th December a man was detained by shop staff following a theft of Gammon. Officers attended and the suspect was searched and found also to be in possession of cannabis. The male was arrested and enquiries are continuing.
Also on 12th December, another man was arrested and dealt with for theft from a different shop.
Police enquiries have now identified a man caught on CCTV stealing from a shop on 25th November, and his arrest is imminent.

NEWS ITEM

On Sunday 27th November, officers from the neighbourhood team worked with police dog handlers to visit a number of pubs and known centres of antisocial behaviour in Willerby and Kirk Ella, as well as in other parts of the Haltemprice area.

We used spaniels which are trained to give a ‘passive indication’ of people who have had recent contact with certain controlled drugs.
The dogs do not jump up or have contact with customers in the pub, but are walked through and will ‘sit’ directly in front of anyone from whom they sense recent drug contact. This would result in uniformed officers asking the person to move to a private area where a search can be carried out.

This is part of a seasonal campaign to highlight that drugs are carried into pubs.
I am pleased to report that there were no indications in the Willerby or Kirk Ella pubs we visited, although we did make 4 cannabis seizures in the surrounding area.
