SHOP THEFT’s VILLAGE CENTRE - Shoplifting is a priority for Humberside Police and this priority will continue into the new year. Police Officers, Special Constables and PCSO’s will continue to use intelligence to target known offenders and will carry out highly visual patrols in the main retail areas and provide advice / support to shop and retail owners.

NOVEMBER UPDATE
During November some 49 extra hours of high viz patrol and store visits have been conducted. Staff have been reassured and supported, known shoplifters have been stopped and spoken to. This work resulted in a female adult being identified by shop workers and discovered to have stolen goods whilst paying for others. She was issued a fixed fine by the police and banned from the store and all the goods were recovered.
On the 21st November during the Christmas Lights switch on. Two know shoplifters were spotted and followed in the crowd and into a store. They were challenged and soon left the area without any thefts being reported. A known shoplifter called LEWIS has appeared at Hull Magistrates Court following a number of thefts in the area. He was found guilty by the court and sentenced to 22 weeks imprisonment.
DECEMBER UPDATE
47 hours of dedicated patrols outside retails premises were carried out during December and CCTV was monitored, resulting in a number of challenges to know suspects. Recorded shop theft was well down during December but remains a police and neighbourhood priority.

ANTI SOCIAL USE OF MOTOR VEHICLES COTTINGHAM CENTRE - The neighbourhood policing team have noticed an increase in vehicles being used in an anti social manor in the village centre. This includes excessive revving of engines loud music and speeding. Residents and other members of the public can feel intimidated and frightened by this behaviour. Officers will be tasked to inspect vehicles and take enforcement action where necessary. Drivers and riders will be issued warnings and if the behaviour continues then their vehicles will be seized and fines issued.

NOVEMBER UPDATE
During November the Towns CCTV has been monitored resulting in info and intelligence gathering. This resulted in evidence being gathered on a known youth who had been using his motor bike aggressively. He was seen to show off and skid deliberately in front of his friends. This road surface was marked and he was not in proper control of his vehicle. Officers were in attendance and due to a previous warning have been issued the motor bike was seized off him. The rider will now have to pay a large fine to recover his vehicle was has been reported for offences. This proactive action has sent a clear message to the youths of Cottingham that Anti social use of vehicles will be taken seriously and has provided some reassurance for local residents.

NEWS ITEM

On Sunday 27th November, officers from the neighbourhood team worked with police dog handlers to visit a number of pubs in Cottingham and in other parts of our area.
We used spaniels which are trained to give a ‘passive indication’ of people who have had recent contact with certain controlled drugs.
The dogs do not jump up or have contact with customers in the pub, but are walked through and will ‘sit’ directly in front of anyone from whom they sense recent drug contact. This would result in uniformed officers asking the person to move to a private area where a search can be carried out.

This is part of a seasonal campaign to highlight that drugs are carried into pubs.
I am pleased to report that there were no indications in the Cottingham pubs we visited, although we did make 4 cannabis seizures in the surrounding area.
