NON-DWELLING BURGLARY IN COTTINGHAM. Since the start of the year, we have experienced night time burglary from garages and sheds in the area between New Village Road and the Hull city boundary. We have found that locks are being forced and padlocks cut with bolt croppers, in addition to the usual problem of doors being left unlocked. Various property is being stolen but bicycles appear to be the main target at this time.
The neighbourhood policing team have contributed to an increase in police patrols in this area, making shift changes to patrol in uniform and in plain clothes throughout the night, actively stopping and checking people out on foot or riding bicycles late at night, and checking second hand shops and dealers. We have also carried out house to house enquiries and offered crime prevention and security advice.
MAY UPDATE
Offences have tapered off as a result of the increased police patrols and better security, but we are still experiencing some break-ins in the area between Inglemire Lane and Bricknell Avenue and ask that residents remain vigilant and report suspicious activity by calling 101. -

BAG DIPPING From time to time over the last few months, shops in our area have been targeted by ‘bag-dippers’, a kind of pick-pocket who looks for open shopping bags and removes purses or wallets while the owner is shopping. Supermarkets have been hardest hit but thieves will operate in any busy or crowded shop and charity shops have been a popular target too. Cash cards have often been used at nearby ATMs within a few minutes of the theft.
We have been visiting busy shops and speaking with shoppers who have bags on push-chairs and shopping trolleys, or open bags on their shoulder. We have studied CCTV to try and identify offenders but generally these seem to be people coming from outside the area. We have been able to offer clip on bells (cat bells) which are easily fastened to purses and will alert the owner if the purse is moved, but our main concern is that some victims have clearly not been cautious enough with their PIN number and we are appealing to card holders to take care when entering their PIN, to NOT write it down (even in a cleverly disguised way) but to commit the number to memory and destroy any written record of it.

THEFT FROM SHOPS – COTTINGHAM Theft from shops in Cottingham is generally low but over the last few weeks a small number of repeat offenders have been coming to the village to steal high value products such as cosmetics on a regular basis.
The neighbourhood policing team have increased the patrols of retail outlets to provide reassurance and deter offenders.
We have been making personal visits to each incident, gathering together all of the reported offences, searching shop CCTV and Cottingham CCTV for images of suspects and identifying those offenders who are carrying out these repeat offences.
Regular arrests are being made and our colleagues in the CID have been collating all of the offences for each suspect so that the full extent of their offending is presented to the courts.
