Shop Lifting – Beverley Town Centre

During April 2012 there were a total of 10 offences of shop theft reported to Beverley Police Station from which 4 of the offences have been detected and further enquiries are being made regarding the outstanding offences.

Also during the month of April a new shop theft project involving the voluntary staffing of Humberside Police’s Special Constabulary was launched and will involve some highly visible patrols, mixed in with plain clothes officers spending time in the Beverley Town Centre area targeting those who actively commit thefts in Beverley.

Although we are very much in the infancy of this project the enthusiasm of the Special Constabulary has been encouraging and although teething problems can be very much a part of any new idea I have no doubt that the plans already in place coupled with the enthusiasm and dedication of the Special Constabulary can only lead to positive results.

Again all efforts are being made to keep in regular contact with the local shops and to ensure that information obtained regarding offenders is acted upon in a professional, efficient and positive manner to prevent offenders targeting our Town.

Remember shop theft is a crime and the persons responsible are criminals, any information regarding crimes committed or persons involved can be reported to Humberside Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Crime Prevention – Beverley

Crime prevention again remains a priority for Beverley, with staff from the neighbourhood Team actively engaged in identifying insecurities and making things tougher for would be criminals. Further details of any events and persons to contact can be found by visiting Beverley Police Station or speaking to any members of staff in the team.

Simple home advice such as securing windows and doors, fitting alarms, having no cold calling stickers on your doors and even down to small changes such as ensuring that outdoor security lights are working all makes a difference and makes your house a less appealing prospect to the ‘would be’ criminal.

For vehicles the advice is even simpler. DO NOT leave the vehicle insecure, even for a minute. Make sure that all items of value (or perceived value – just because you know that shopping bag is empty does not mean a criminal will see it the same) on display. Do make sure to park in well lit busy areas preferably where there are cctv cameras present or security who check the area. If your car has an alarm or deadlocks, make sure these are set prior to leaving the vehicle.

For personal safety always plan where you are going, let someone else know where you will be going, which route you will be taking and when you will be back. Take a mobile phone with you (with sufficient charge) and be aware of your surroundings. If at any point you do not feel safe then if available enter a shop, public house or other crowded place and call a friend to come and meet you.

Please feel free to visit Beverley Police Station and speak with any of the staff who can offer advice on how to remain safe and crime free throughout May.

The three Pcso’s for the St Marys Ward Steve CHEUNG, Donna MANSLEY and Anna CLARK continue to be working around the St Marys Ward area during the month and all three are able to offer advice about crime prevention activities, and if they don’t know the answer to your question then they can always find out or point you in the right direction.

If any residents see any properties or vehicles which they feel are insecure by all means contact Humberside Police to report your concerns and efforts will be made to trace the owners, offer advice and most importantly put right the insecurity to prevent them falling foul of an opportunist criminal.

Patrol times and locations

Our strategy is that we use Police Community Support Officers, Regular and Special Constables to patrol set hot spots, such as the policing priorities given as well as those areas where crime and disorder occur. This can change rapidly and the details are taken from calls for service. So, please ring in and report any crime or disorder that you witness or that affects you.

Underage Drinking – Molescroft

Seizures of alcohol continue however they are not near the levels that were experienced at the same point last year. Groups of youths have been stopped throughout the St Marys Ward area however it again looks that Beverley Westwood is going to be a location that they will target as the weather and light nights continue to improve.

Licensed premises are continuing to be targeted and recently there have been no reports nor any Police prosecutions of premises for serving youths underage which again is a positive result.

Further alcohol letters have been sent to youths both locally and those from further afield who visit the Beverley area. Evidence is also being gathered regarding those youths who are persistently in possession of alcohol which may lead to further work with substance misuse workers, the Anti Social Behaviour Team or prosecution. The Neighbourhood Team aims to deal with these youths through the intervention means rather than prosecution and remove the dangers that young people heavily in drink leave themselves open to.

Youths Cycling on Pavements on leaving Longcroft School

Following the update last month meetings have been held with staff at Longcroft School and with staff from the East Riding Council. The meetings have attempted to find a direction and best means of working towards alleviating the problems and both our partners in Longcroft School and the East Riding Council have been very supportive and helpful in planning a means of dealing with the issues.

Checks are ongoing in relation to the issues by members of the Neighbourhood Team and following the complaints a Police led project has been drawn up with several positive actions that shall be completed in the coming weeks and shall be updated via this document.

Anti Social Behaviour outside Tesco’s, Beverley

Staff at Tesco’s have reported incidents on the 13th and 14th April 2010 whereby youths have been causing problems outside the store by blocking customers access into the store and inside by hiding amongst the rails and causing a general nuisance. On both occasions staff have dealt with the problems and the youths have been identified and left the area prior to Police attendance.

The neighbourhood team continue to work with the staff at Tesco’s in dealing with this issue and where possible the youths involved are dealt with for any offences revealed.

The positive of the past month has been a reduced number of incidents at the store involving the same group as they appear to becoming more aware that should they misbehave then they will be dealt with through the Police, Tesco’s and the Anti Social Behaviour Team where appropriate

Under age drinking – Molescroft

The problem of underage drinking remains a priority although as we approach the better weather the numbers of seizures have dropped from previous months which it appears have been down to the active targeting of groups of youths across Beverley and the actions taken following including letters sent home to parents through to referrals to alcohol misuse workers.

The work however continues on and along with the regular officers of the Neighbourhood Team, Special Constables continue to be heavily involved in preventing the access that young people have to alcohol in Beverley and helping to prevent the public order problems that it leads to.

From the Policing and Crime Act 2009 a new offence of persistent possession of alcohol by a person under 18 has been created which allows the Neighbourhood Team the scope to deal with those youths who continue to be caught drinking underage despite the best efforts of the Team and partners to offer diversionary activities. The powers under this new legislation makes it an offence for a young person to possess alcohol in a relevant public place on three or more occasions over a twelve month period

Youths Cycling on Pavements on leaving Longcroft School

The issue of youths cycling on pavements has long been around and is particularly evident around the time that Longcroft School students finish for the day and make their ways home.

Patrols have previously during the winter months conducted an operation in conjunction with whereby youths stopped riding bikes without lights on (a potentially dangerous situation) were provided with lights for their safety and that of general members of the public.

Due to concerns raised further work shall be completed between The Neighbourhood Team and Longcroft School with the intention of not only advising youths but also enforcing any dangerous or illegal behaviour through either actions from The Neighbourhood Team or through Longcroft School.

Patrols will be out completing checks and stops of bikes found to be riding along pavements at the end of school and details and further actions will be completed following liaison with the school.

All parents are advised that if their children do ride their bikes to and from school then to ensure that they do not ride on the pavements and have all of the necessary safety equipment to be riding on the road.

Anti Social Behaviour outside Tesco’s, Beverley

Anti Social behaviour outside Tesco’s has seen an increase over the past two months with numbers of youths being reported to be outside of the store both at the front onto Morton Lane, Beverley and in and around the area of the Pick Up Point to the rear of the store.

Through working closely with the staff at Tesco’s particularly the security staff The Neighbourhood Team have managed to target those who persistently cause nuisance to members of the public only hoping to complete their shopping.

To date six main youths who are persistently in the area have been issued with bans from Tesco’s site and work is ongoing in conjunction with the Anti Social Behaviour Team of East Riding Council for these youths to be placed onto acceptable behaviour contracts in order to try and amend their anti social behaviour and to prevent the problems that have been caused outside of Tesco’s from returning or repeating themselves anywhere else.
